Flowtoys

*All Skill Toys come with inherent risks, especially Fire Toys. Learn and Play at your own risk.

Many of us here at GyroPulse have been the proud owners of Flowtoys for some time now. And having been familiar with their inventory for well over 3 years, things have changed quite a bit. And it’s all been for the better! That’s what makes Flowtoys so unique, both as a business and as a product, that you can count on them to make the improvement and keep current with the needs of performers. I remember the first set of Flowpoi Duo’s I owned, and this was before the ingenious lock in caps. Their system of caps used to rely on pressure to keep the poi from coming out, and it was somewhat flawed. But these guys found out about the problem, fixed it, and sent out a whole new batch of awesome. They listen to what the community needs.

Flowtoys- Lights That Inspire and Motivate Movement

Find Your Flow!

I say all this in preparation for my review of Flowtoys products. As we are now lucky enough to be sponsored by Flowtoys, it’s only fitting that we spend a little time talking about them. And since their marketplace is ever-changing, we decided to only review 2 specific aspects of their product line, which are for the most part complete. Don’t worry, we’ll be mentioning all the other awesome aspects of products they offer, but for now our focus is on Crystal Poi and the Flow-Wand.

Crystal Poi

All the Colors of the Astral Series (including Nebula)! Thanks to Garrett “little G” Runnels for helping.

These are my (Sean) favorite LED poi, and the only LED poi I’ve owned since they came out. There are various reasons as to why I use crystal poi, but the most important is the way it feels. The soft outer shell which protects the Flowlight fits perfectly in my hand, for all sorts of catches, throws, glow-stringing movements. They are the softest poi of this caliber that I’ve played with, which means if you get a little over-excited you won’t knock yourself unconcious. And the weight is both adjustable and comfortable.

An important aspect of any LED investment is durability, and I’m here to squelch any fears people might have. I have not broken a Flowlight in over 2 years. Specifically, I have never broken a Flowlight while using Crystal Poi. I’m sure it’s happened to some people, but I really play with my poi, and 2 + years of success is nothing short of miraculous. Yes, they will break, IF you don’t put them in a case. Like any electronic device, hard impacts are never a good idea. So protect yourself and your investment by using Crystal Poi.

The material used for the casing in Crystal Poi are, as I said before, soft. But they are also designed to evenly diffuse light throughout the poi, such that you have fewer dark spots. They also offer super soft handles, and they use leashes very similar to that of cole-cord. Top that all of with the option to add either 1 or 2 Flowmass easily to each light, and you have LED poi that feel the same as fire poi. Which is great for spinners who love heavy poi for isolations and hybrids. Don’t forget the ability to add a Flowlight onto the ends of your leash create a Flowlight handle, which is perfect for tracing and learning new tricks.

And perhaps the most incredible aspect of owning crystal poi, is the fact that you can use those same Flowlights in a myriad of other toys. Whether it’s a Staff, Juggling Clubs, Flowpoi Trio, or even Rope Dart, the flexibility of their modular system means that you save money. No need to purchase entirely new LED’s, instead simply take one toy apart, and transform it into another. This modular system is constantly changing and improving, so head over to Flowtoys website for the latest developments.

They currently offer two options when purchasing a full set of Crystal Poi, which is usually cheaper than buying all the pieces individually. The base model, which includes 2 Flowlights of your choosing from the currently available colors, the Crystal Cases, Leashes and Handles runs for $59.95. The Second package they offer comes with 2 Extra Flowlights for handles, and 2 Flowmass (one for each) for $99.95 . You can also choose to add extra Flowmass, Flowlights, Rechargeable Batteries (highly recommended), and even choose not to include handles.

All in all, the cost of Crystal Poi alone make them a great purchase. Sure, a pair of simple LED balls is only perhaps $30-$40 a pair, but the battery life and overall lifetime of those is significantly less. Not to mention they don’t look nearly as nice. In the long run, Flowtoys end up saving you money compared to a cheaper brand, and you look better doing it. See how good I look!

Flowlights: Over the years, the brightness and modes of their Flowlights has steadily increased. The Fire lights of yesterday pale in comparison to today’s lights. And they are always trying to create new and unique colors which will dazzle your senses. Here’s list of all the colors Flowtoys has ever offered, including some which are no longer in stock (just for fun):

  • Core Series: Air, Water, Fire, Earth and Spirit

These lights are a constant in the Flowlight repetoire. While they are currently sold out of a few, they will certainly be back in stock soon, and they are always improving them.

  • Astral Series: Luna, Sol, Nebula

This is a new series Flowtoys has launched, with several other colors to join the mix soon.

  • Special Release: Love, Freedom, Watermelon, Luck

These are Flowlights with only 1 initial run of production. While they have brought the Freedom and Love back for multiple runs, there’s no guarantee. And Luck was just that, a manufacturing error. So don’t expect that one back anytime.

Here’s my little collection, from which I’m only missing Luck (That’s right, there’s some Nebula action in there. See if you can spot the Nebula!)

So if anyone out there has 2 Luck to sell me, I’d be MORE than willing to take them off your hands in order to complete my collection. I was one of those collectors as a kid, you understand.

Flow-Wand

I’m sure we’re all familiar with the phrase ‘often imitated, but never duplicated’. Well, that’s the honest truth when it concerns this insanely popular levitation wand. Originally this style of toy was used by Magicians for Dancing Cane acts. Flowtoys took the idea, applied it towards flow and dance, and ran with it. Now they have a product which is super lightweight, durable, and very well-balanced. It’s certainly something that enhances anyones dancing experience.

Here’s the folks at Flowtoys to give you more specific than I can on just how the Flow-Wand works:

The core of the flow-wand is fiberglass, which is nice and heavy, extremely strong, and does not warp with humidity or temperature. We drill, bevel and clean the fiberglass and apply a special tape to give the wand its beautiful holographic finish. This step has to be done very carefully to avoid getting bubbles under the tape. We then put a layer of clear heat shrink over the whole wand to protect the tape and prevent it from peeling off in humid weather. The hole is finished with handtools and tiny clear caps finish the ends and ensure that no fiberglass is exposed.

Now that we know just how complex and beautiful this toy is, let me shock you a bit by telling you it’s only $25.00. Not only is it gorgeous, it’s affordable for everyone in the community. It’ll get you dancing and flowing in no time. And that’s really the core of Flowtoys values. Affordable and beautiful toys, made specifically for flow.

And if you need extra little pieces for your wand, want to make your string longer, or replace any older parts, they sell everything you need on a per piece basis. Which, again, saves you money.

Hopefully we’ve inspired you non-Flowtoy people out there to try out this great product. They’re great toys, made by good people. People from our own community. So if you’re going to support someone, why not them. Good luck!

Cosmic Hooper’s Emporium of Bliss: Review

*All Skill Toys come with inherent risks, especially Fire Toys. Learn and Play at your own risk.

So, I have finally wrangled up all of the information that I felt would be needed to do an adequate, thorough review of the LED Hoops made by Cosmic Hooper’s Emporium of Bliss.

Here we go!

A brief rundown on what he offers: Regular sized LED hoops in 2 tubing sizes– 7/8, 1 inch – Solid Color LED’s available include: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple (UV), Pink, White – Slow Color Changing LED’s – Fast Color Changing LED’s – Strobing LED’s (Shooting Star):

Red/Green/Blue Purple/White/Green Pink/White/Green Blue/White/Green -Any and All combinations of the above are available -Each come with a smart charger, which plugs into the wall -Sizing is completely Customizable -Custom Hoop Tape or Sanding available -All Hoops come with at least 16 LED’s standard, and can be increased to 24 LED’s Mini LED Hoops sold as a pair available in 2 tubing sizes: 3/4, (7/8 upon request) -All LED choices are the same, with the same customizability -They come sanded down for better grip -14 LED’s standard -3/4 inch tubing is collapsable for easily travel, as well as the ability to create one regular hoop per pair That’s quite a few options available. Enough to satisfy even the pickiest hoopers. Now for the economics: Regular sized Hoops start at $130! LED Mini Pairs start at $165 (with 8 LED’s/hoop)! For more detailed pricing info visit his website: CosmicHooper.com Those are all of the factual specs for his hoops that I can think of, but how does it compare to other LED Hoops? Well, the only other LED hoops that I have owned are PSI-Hoops. And in my opinion those rank in the top tier of LED hoops on the market. Here are all of the important categories in which Cosmic Hooper is comparable or better: *They are both rechargeable via wall plug *For 99% of people, the tubing choices are equal (psi does offer 2 types of tubing, PP and HDPE, as well as a 5/8 inch) *They have extremely similar LED choices available, all the way up to the variety of strobing LED’s *They have the same type of recessed on/off switch *They have a comparable warranty (6 months for Cosmic Hooper) *Both have great Customer Service (Rob Grader from Cosmic Hooper is simply lovely) *They both have a long battery life (6-10 hours on a single charge) **Cosmic Hooper comes with more LED’s standard (16 vs. 12), resulting in a brighter hoop ** Cosmic Hooper has a charge time of only 2 hours! **The base price for Cosmic Hooper is $130 (16-18 LED’s) vs. $250 (12 LED’s) Now I have to be brutally honest or else this turns into an Advertisement and not a Review. The categories in which PSI-Hoops is better than Cosmic Hooper: *After playing with the hoops, I noticed that on one trick in particular (the one where you twist the hoop from horizontal to vertical continuously, moving it around your body) the balance on Cosmic Hooper was lacking. You could feel the other end pulling it down. But it is only on that trick which it is noticeable. This is due to the fact that PSI-Hoops uses 6 balance points as opposed to the 2 that come standard. You can ask for more balance points, but it will increase the weight. *The plug-in for recharging on the 3/4 inch tubing for mini’s will sometimes come a little further out from the edge of the hoop than I would like. I simply push it back down, and move on. It has not caused any actual problems, but it is worrisome. (according to Rob, this has been documented and is being worked on) *The Color Changing LED’s start the cycle over at the color Red upon hard impact. This might be something to do with the components of the LED’s, but it has not yet resulted in any problems. And that’s it! That’s all of the negatives that I could muster. And while there may be some issues which need looking into, Rob is more than likely aware, or is not offended or taken aback at all about being made aware. He’s extremely friendly and down to earth. Now for my personal joys at owning LED Hoops from Cosmic Hooper:
I have 2 sets of LED Mini’s from Cosmic Hooper, and they are awesome! The first set is 7/8 inch tubing, 22 inches in diameter. It has 14 LED’s which alternate between solid Blue and Purple/White/Green Shooting Star. The other set is 3/4 inch tubing and 22 inches in diameter. It also has 14 LED’s and alternates between solid Pink and Blue/White/Green Shooting Star. That one is also collapsable. And it’s my favorite of the two sets. The 3/4 inch is lightweight, and easier to grip for transitions and weaves. They are both SUPER bright for such small hoops. The cost of these is $200 for the 7/8 inch, and $220 for the 3/4 inch tubing. And in comparison to PSI-Hoops prices, which start at $450, I think I made a pretty good choice. The only thing I recommend for people on the go who are interested in buying a set of Mini’s is to purchase extra smart chargers ($20 per charger) to account for each charge point. This will allow you to charge the entire set at once. Here’s a video of me with both of these hoops, and this is the same video which is, right now, featured on Hooping.org as the Video of the Day: What do other Gyronauts think of Cosmic Hooper? Tash Kouri, El Presidente De La Gyronauts: 2 Hoops, 7/8 inch tubing, 33 inch diameter, 20 LED’s: Slow Color Changing, Solid Pink and Purple, Pink/White/Green Shooting Star $145 “So I love LED hoops. Not only do they push and inspire you to develop as a hooper, a decent LED hoop also brings your performance from “hula hoop lady with the dancing and tricks” to “ASDFKH PROFESSIONAL BLOWYOURMINDTASTIC PERFORMANCE ARTISTE!” If you’re serious about hooping, get a friggin LED hoop. That said, LED hoops are pretty expensive to come by. You could try to make your own….but trust me, it’s not going to come out perfect (I’ve seen so many attempts end up with a hoop that lights up….but they always rank inferior to the creations of the folks who’ve been doing it for a while). You could buy one for cheap….but it’s probably not going to look as blingtastic or feel as “right” as it could. (A professional hooper needs something that they can spin for hours at fast speeds without getting tired….IE light and weighted properly. Many LED hoops I’ve found come out much heavier than anticipated, due to the addition of LEDs and batteries.) You could buy the Big Brand of LED hoops from psihoops.com (I have bought 3 over the years) and it will look/feel/perform FANTASTICALY. However, it will cost $300. Trust me. Go to cosmichooper.com. Rob’s hoops cost a fraction of the cost of a PSI, but still offer that high quality look, feel, and rechargeable ease. You can get a nice weight, can communicate with a real person (what a guy Rob is!), and design your fantasy LED hoop with solid colors, changing colors, and/or strobes. I love my two 7/8th inch tubing, 33 inch diameter hoops with strobes, slow color changing, and pink and purple solids. The crazy thing is, these hoops are BRIGHTER and charge FASTER than the expensive PSIs I have bought in the past. In conclusion, you’d be stupid not to go with CosmicHooper.com. Get in touch with Rob and design your ideal hoop today!” Aura Cleveland
Co-Creator of Prophet Visuals Photographer Extraordinaire 1 Hoop, 7/8 inch tubing, 34.5 inch diameter, 21 LED’s: Ranborion’s Belt $140 “I have been looking and waiting to find the right LED hoop for awhile, and I am so glad I finally discovered Cosmic Hooper’s hoops. I really like the weight and size, and they are amazingly bright! As a starving artist, I also really appreciate the fair and reasonable price! I love my Rainborion’s Belt- I’ve always wanted a rainbow hoop, but I also really like all the other Cosmic Hooper hoops that I have seen. They have such a wide and creative range of options to make the hoop fit unique styles and needs! I also like that the LEDs are nicely arranged so that you can get gaffer tape added for grip and daytime decoration without it affecting the brightness of the hoop.” Kat “Hoop Kyttn” Holmans 1 Hoop, 7/8 inch tubing, 33 inch diameter, 20 LED’s: Solid Pink and Purple, Pink/White/Green and Purple/White/Green Shooting Stars $165 “As a hooper, and performer, I have had the opportunity to test out quite a few different types of LED hoops, of all price ranges. I have even made my own, but none of them compare in brightness, or in value, to those from CosmicHooper.com The hoop is light weight, beautiful, and can be fully charged in 2 hours. It easily rivals other hoops that cost twice as much, or more. CosmicHooper.com offers a wide variety of colors, strobes and sizes. They will custom build you the hoop of your dreams, and you won’t have to break the bank to get it! There is even a 6 month warranty which will cover all internal electrical components of the hoop. The hoop, in action, is amazing! Swirling around in a circle of lighted bliss, the hoops from CosmicHooper.com are impossible to put down!” Misty Smith Co. founder of Hoola Loops Circle of Play in Georgetown, Texas Honorable Mention for Newbie Hooper of the Year Hoopies 2010 1 Hoop, 7/8 inch tubing, 34.5 inch diameter, 21 LED’s: Rainborion’s Belt $140 “As you probably know, there comes a time when every hoop dancer desires and even requires an LED hoop to “up” their hoop dance performance. That time had come for me and being a full time student with limited funds I thought my dreams of LED hoop bliss were in reality and at least for the time being unreachable. That was until I found Cosmic Hooper’s Emporium of Bliss where Rob, creator of these blissful circles of light, came to my rescue by offering quality performance LED hoops that won’t break the bank at $140-$170. I feel compelled to mention that not only are these hoops affordable they surpass any LED hoops I have ever seen or played with in LED brightness! Another good point to make for the hooper on the go, you can take comfort in the two hours charge time for your hoop to light up in full charge for six to seven hours of play time! I have two Cosmic Hooper hoops now and the only thing I can come up with as a negative is that my 1″ tubing hoop is a bit rattly (another issue which Rob has taken care of, but we still personally recommend the 7/8) , however taking into account the hoops brightness it really doesn’t bother me personally. I would recommend Cosmic Hooper’s Emporium of Bliss LED hoops to anyone looking for a performance LED hoop that will be sure to spin you into a new level of hoop performance and strengthen your confidence with the abundance of compliments you will receive!” Elijah Parker Co-Creator of Prophet Visuals VJ Extraordinaire Contact Juggling, Official Videographer of The Gyronauts “Fuck Yea!”
